William Starr Basinger reminiscences, 1889-1910.

The collection consists of the reminiscences of William Starr Basinger, which he began in 1889 and completed in 1896, he then made short diary-type entries from 1896-1910. The reminiscences contain information on the genealogy of the Basinger and Starr families; the involvement of his uncle William Elon Basinger in Dade's Battle of the 2nd Seminole War in Florida with pasted newsclippings; growing up in Savannah (Ga.); going to college at the University of Georgia; the law profession; his involvement in the Savannah Volunteer Guards (later the 8th Georgia Battalion) in the Civil War stationed in Savannah (Ft. Screven), then Charleston (Ft. Boggs and Ft. Wagoner), then near Richmond (Va.) where he was captured and sent to prison on Johnson's Island (Ohio); and after the war, he discusses the move to Dahlonega (Ga.) and his presidency at the North Georgia Agricultural College.
